The city of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are organizing several “National Night Out” events throughout the community. In its 25th year, National Night Out is a nationwide effort to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. Sheriff Doug Gillespie and Ward 2 Councilman Steve Wolfson will kick off National Night Out at 6 p.m. tonight, August 5, at Vistas Park located at 11311 Alta Drive. Other members of the City Council, including Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese, Ward 6 Councilman Steven D. Ross and Ward 5 Councilman Ricki Barlow will also be on hand. Officials from Metro, the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department, Las Vegas City Marshals, representatives from the city of Las Vegas Departments of Leisure Services, Public Works and Planning, and other local vendors will be in attendance to provide valuable information about crime prevention.
In addition to the event at Vistas Park, another city-sponsored National Night Out gathering will take place in Ward 1 at Clark High School, 4291 Penwood. City Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will begin the evening with a back-to-school fair from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Clark High cafeteria. Then from 6 to 8 p.m. the National Night Out event will follow, also in the school cafeteria.
Many other privately organized National Night Out events are taking place throughout the community and across the country.
