Lighted gateway welcomes visitors to the Fremont East District

In late August 2007, the city of Las Vegas completed a $5.5 million streetscape effort for downtown’s new entertainment district, Fremont East.  These streetscape improvements were made possible through a public-private partnership by the city of Las Vegas and Fremont East property owners.

Located in the heart of downtown, the Fremont East District sits adjacent to the popular tourist attraction called Fremont Street Experience, which was visited by 18.7 million people last year.

Improvements made included the creation of wider sidewalks and more pedestrian-friendly streets; landscaping; lighted gateways and four 40-foot-tall, retro-looking neon signs. Through this streetscape effort, the city is capitalizing on popular nostalgia by reviving the old glamour of vintage Las Vegas.

From Las Vegas Boulevard to Eighth Street, three blocks of Fremont Street experienced this transformation. Streetscape improvements were begun in late January 2007 and took seven months to complete.

As part of its downtown revitalization efforts, the city’s Redevelopment Agency contributed funds to this renovation in an effort to attract additional non-gaming nightclubs, cocktail lounges and entertainment hotspots to the area.

In addition to an attractive, extensive renovation effort, the city offers other inducements for businesses to locate an establishment in Las Vegas’ newest hotspot. These include a reduced Tavern Limited License fee and the Entertainment District Visual Improvement Program (EVIP). The EVIP offers a rebate of up to a maximum of $95,000 for any qualified exterior improvement costs.

Over the course of the last four years, a host of entertainment venues and taverns have opened and enhanced their businesses within and around the Fremont East District. These include:

• Brass Lounge - 425 Fremont St. upstairs from Hennessey's Tavern  (702) 382-1182. Jazz lounge and live music venue. 
• The Bunkhouse - 124 S. 11th St. (702) 384-4536. Cowboy tavern and grill featuring bands performing a variety of music: punk, rock, blues, country and more.
• Celebrity - 201 N. Third St. (702) 384-2582. Live entertainment venue. Open for special events.
• Dino's Lounge  - 1516 Las Vegas Blvd. So. in 18b Arts District (702) 382-3894. Neighborhood bar with live bands.
