City Council To Proclaim Tomorrow As Start! Walking Day
April Also To Be Recognized As Chamber Music Month

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will proclaim tomorrow, April 16, as Start! Walking Day. The event is part of the American Heart Association’s efforts to get individuals to participate in physical activity, such as walking, whenever possible. Representatives from the local office of the American Heart Association will be on hand to accept a proclamation.

Mayor Goodman will also proclaim April as Chamber Music Month. The organization, Las Vegas Chamber Concerts, was formed in 2007 to promote the music genre to the Las Vegas community. The group has organized several concerts during the month of April. Director Raja Rahman will be one hand to accept a proclamation.

Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow will also recognize the efforts of a group of students from the UNLV School of Nursing. The group, led by Nancy Menzel, conducted research on the homeless population in Ward 5.

The City Council will also pay tribute to Israel “Cachao” Lopez, the creator of the Mambo, who performed in Las Vegas in the 1970s. Lopez passed away last month at the age of 89. A proclamation will be presented in his honor to representatives from the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce.

The City Council will also honor the Senior of the Quarter, Betty Craik, for her community involvement and volunteer efforts. Craik has been involved with the Meadows Neighborhood Preservation Association and the Traffic and Parking Commission. She also teaches a special class to fifth grade students at Griffith Elementary School about manners.

Finally, the City Council will recognize the April employee of the month, Sherry Bonnett. Bonnett, a parking and hearings collections supervisor, has been with the city since March 2006.
