City Council To Recognize 2008 Helldorado Parade Winners
Ward 1 Citizen Of The Month To Also Be Recognized

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., the City Council will present trophies to the winners of the Helldorado Parade contest, which recently took place in downtown Las Vegas. Winners were chosen in five categories. The “best of the parade” award went to the Mexican Patriotic Committee, “best use of a theme” went to the Fiber Arts Guild and “most creative” went to the Nevada Ranger Cowboy Action Shooters. Other awards included “best city staff entry,” which went to the Historic Preservation Commission and the “last, but not least entry,” which went to Cimarron Memorial High School.

Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will present a proclamation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help kick off its 10-day public awareness campaign titled “Destination Joy.” Since its inception in 1980, the organization has granted more than 161,000 wishes to children who are diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions.

Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow will recognize some UNLV nursing students for an obesity study they conducted at Twin Lakes Elementary School. Under the direction of Dr. Michelle Clark, six university students went out to the school and surveyed the surrounding outside amenities. Some of their research revealed that the nearby park wasn’t being maintained very well and was being under utilized. Their research showed the need for more outside activities in the area.

The city’s Public Works Department will be honored for earning the American Public Works Association’s 2008 Project of the Year Award for structures less than $5,000,000 for city Fire Station #47. The award was given based upon meeting the life safety needs of the community, aesthetics, intricacy of construction and innovative financing. The city designed the station while The Howard Hughes Corporation provided the land and paid to have the facility built. The fire station has been turned over to the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Department and is currently in use. The station is located at 911 Ridge Pine Street.

Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will also recognize the June Citizen of the Month, Vianney Hernandez. Hernandez is originally from Mexico and has been the manager of a local apartment complex for four years. Councilwoman Tarkanian chose to honor Hernandez because of her commitment to the community. She regularly attends meetings at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Bolden Area Command and has been very involved in activities such as neighborhood clean-ups with the K.E.E.N. (Keeping Everyone’s Eyes on the Neighborhood) program.
