City Council To Present Key To The City To Basketball Great Larry Johnson
The 2008 Employee Of The Year And The July Citizen Of The Month

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will present a Key to the City to basketball great Larry Johnson. Johnson helped lead the University of Nevada Las Vegas Runnin' Rebels to a national NCAA championship in 1990 and back-to-back Final Four appearances. He then went on to have successful careers with the Charlotte Hornets and New York Knicks. He is a member of the UNLV Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Councilman Steve Wolfson will also honor the Ward 2 Citizen of the Month Jerry Peterson. Councilman Wolfson chose Peterson for the honor because of his extraordinary volunteer efforts. Peterson has been a volunteer chaplain at Summerlin Hospital for five years and has logged more than 1,400 hours. He has been available any time of the day or night to help patients and families in need of comfort.

Also during the ceremonial portion of the meeting, the City Council will proclaim July as Flash Flood Awareness Month by presenting a proclamation to Clark County Regional Flood Control District General Manager Gale Fraser. Fraser will speak about the dangers of flash floods and precautions that should be taken at this time of the year.

July will also be recognized as National Parks and Recreation Month. Acting director of the Leisure Services Department Billie Bastian and the director of the Field Operations Department Larry Haugsness will provide information on the variety of parks and recreation programs and services the city provides. As part of the recognition, the city will also be honoring the Las Vegas Sin City Skulls Quad Rugby Team, which is part of the city’s Adaptive Recreation Division. The team recently won the DIII National Championship and is ranked 19th by the U.S. Quad Rugby Association. Program Coordinator Bob Murray will also be recognized for being selected to the 2008 U.S. Paralympic Quad Rugby Team as support staff. He will be traveling to Beijing, China, later this summer. The City Council will also recognize Leisure Services staff member Andrea Anzalone for being named as the Nevada Parks and Recreation Society Young Professional of the Year.

Finally, the City Council will honor the 2008 Employee of the Year, Oscar Sida. Sida, who is a microcomputer specialist with the Leisure Services Department, has been with the city since 2001. Sida researched and implemented a fingerprint technology to account for recreation center visitors. This technology replaced traditional identification cards, saving the city more than $200,000 on cards, printer ribbons and cleaning products. Sida was named Employee of the Month in December 2007.
