Las Vegas Neighborhood Rallies Young Residents To Paint Mural On Sound Wall

A Las Vegas neighborhood is rallying young residents to paint a mural on the U.S. 95 sound wall near Rancho and Mesquite Avenues on Wednesday, July 30, at 8:30 a.m. The project is part of the Rancho Springs Neighborhood Association’s plan to beautify its area and is partially funded by a city of Las Vegas Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program Grant (YNAPP).

Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will join the community on the mural project.

“This is a great project because this neighborhood is getting its young people involved to paint a beautiful mural,” Councilwoman Tarkanian said. “When communities join together like this they can accomplish amazing things. My hope is that more neighborhoods will get organized through the city so they can take advantage of all the benefits that we offer.”

YNAPP grants are administered by the city of Las Vegas Neighborhood Services Department. Neighborhood Services is currently accepting applications for YNAPP grants until September 12, 2008, at 5 p.m. Applications are available on the city’s Web site at www.lasvegasnevada.gov or at the Neighborhood Services Department located on the second floor of City Hall, located at 400 Stewart Avenue.

YNAPP prepares youth for challenges they may face as adults and offers an opportunity to improve their communities. Youth groups partnering with neighborhood associations can apply for $1,000 grants to make community improvements. They are responsible for matching the grant with volunteer labor, donated materials, or cash.

Las Vegas residents can tap many city resources such as grant funding, access to planning professionals and free education classes for their community. Residents who are interested in getting these benefits or organizing a neighborhood association should contact the city of Las Vegas Neighborhood Services Department at 229-2330. Neighborhood Services promotes, develops and supports safe, healthy neighborhoods through partnerships, education and compliance. Residents can visit the city’s Web site to see what services are available at www.lasvegasnevada.gov.
