City Council To Recognize Local Winners Of The Nevada League Of Cities And Municipalities Youth Awards
August Citizen Of The Month To Also Be Recognized

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese will recognize the August Citizen of the Month, Jim Banner, for his many contributions to southern Nevada. Banner served in the Nevada State Assembly for nine regular sessions and two special sessions in the 1970s and 80s. During his tenure in the assembly he served as chairman of the Labor and Management Committee where he worked diligently to improve laws that govern injured workers. He also worked on many bills that improved the public education system.

The City Council will also recognize two local students who were recipients of the Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities Youth Awards. The awards program recognizes Nevada’s youth who are involved in community service. The first recipient, Kallie Hickman, is a student at Cadwallader Middle School. She served as the student body vice president and has participated in several volunteer service projects. The other recipient, Alexandria Vaughn, is a graduate of Palo Verde High School. She served as senior class president and has participated in many other activities including music and sports.

Councilman Steven D. Ross will recognize students from Ernest J. May Elementary School for successfully meeting a reading challenge that he made to them during Nevada Reading Week. Councilman Ross promised the students that they could dye his hair pink if they successfully read 10,000 books. The councilman joined them recently at a school assembly where four students colored his hair bright pink.

Finally, two city employees will be recognized for honors they recently received from the American Society for Public Administration. Enterprise Program Manager Pat Dues was named Emerging Public Administrator of the Year and Fire Chief Greg Gammon was presented with the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
