Starting Tuesday, Oct. 13, temporary closures will take place on Summerlin Parkway between U.S. Highway 95 and Buffalo Drive. Detour signs will be clearly posted.
The two upcoming temporary closures are necessary due to work associated with construction of the Tenaya Way overpass over the Summerlin Parkway.
- Beginning at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, through 5 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Summerlin Parkway will be closed westbound from U.S. 95 to Buffalo, to pour concrete for a barrier railing that is being constructed for the new overpass. The work will close the westbound flyover that connects northbound U.S. 95 to the Summerlin Parkway. The existing southbound on-ramp from U.S. 95 to the westbound Summerlin Parkway is closed and will remain closed through October. Eastbound travel on the Summerlin Parkway will not be affected in this work phase.
- Beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, the Summerlin Parkway will be closed, in both directions, between U.S. 95 and Buffalo. The westbound flyover that connects northbound U.S. 95 to the Summerlin Parkway will also be closed, for crews to remove the bridge false-work.
During the closure, motorists traveling from northbound U.S. 95 to the Summerlin Parkway may want to use the Rainbow Boulevard southbound exit to westbound Westcliff Drive, to northbound Buffalo, to continue travel westbound on the Summerlin Parkway.
Motorists traveling eastbound on the Summerlin Parkway to northbound U.S. 95 may want to use the Buffalo northbound exit to Lake Mead Boulevard eastbound. Motorists traveling from the Summerlin Parkway to southbound U.S. 95 may want to use the Buffalo southbound exit to eastbound Westcliff to northbound Rainbow.
The traffic flow changes are necessary as part of the $7.9 million Tenaya Way Overpass and Bonanza Trail project. Work started in January and will take approximately 10 months to complete.
The project includes construction of approximately one-half mile of street improvements to connect Tenaya from Westcliff to Washington Avenue. An overpass bridge structure is being built over the Summerlin Parkway, along with retaining walls, barrier rails and median islands. Streetlights, traffic signals, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and a pedestrian underpass will be constructed. Sanitary sewer and storm drainage improvements are also part of the project.
In addition to the overpass, a 1,350-foot shared use pathway on the north side of the Summerlin Parkway is being constructed to connect Bill Briare Family Park to the Kellogg-Zaher Sports Complex. Known as the Bonanza Trail, this pathway will eventually connect the Summerlin trail system to downtown Las Vegas.
Funding for the project is provided by the city of Las Vegas, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, and the Bureau of Land Management through the sale of public lands as authorized by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act.
Southwest Iron Works is the project contractor, while the city of Las Vegas Public Works Department is managing the project. The city’s Planning and Development department developed the Bonanza Trail concept and secured federal funds for its construction.
