City Of Las Vegas Celebrates GIS Day Nov. 18
Educational Presentations Planned For Geographic Information Systems Day

The city of Las Vegas will recognize the 11th annual global Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day this year with educational presentations in six local schools, a feature on the “City Scene” program on KCLV Channel 2 now through Nov. 27, and a special presentation at the City Council meeting Nov. 18. Part of Geography Awareness Week, GIS Day events seek to raise awareness of the capabilities of spatial technologies and the career opportunities in the field. The use of GIS tools and methods provide city officials, staff and residents with more accurate and useful information for decision-making and a better understanding of the world. Many GIS-produced maps are available on the city Web site at www.lasvegasnevada.gov.

On GIS Day Nov. 18, city staff from Public Works, Information Technologies, Leisure Services, the Office of Business Development, Planning and Development, and the Office of Cultural Affairs will speak to students about their respective roles in the city as well as how they utilize GIS technology. The schools participating this year include:

Ward 1  Frank E. Garside Junior High School
Ward 2  Sig Rogich Middle School
Ward 3  Howard E. Hollingsworth Elementary School
Ward 4 Cimarron-Memorial High School
Ward 5  Kit Carson Elementary School
Ward 6  Howard E. Heckethorn Elementary School

GIS Day began in 1999, and has been celebrated by more than 10,000 organizations in more than 80 countries. It is a way for GIS users to share their knowledge and passion with others and show the impact the technology is making in our lives each day through real-world applications. GIS Day is celebrated annually on the Wednesday of the National Geographic Society's Geography Awareness Week, always the third week in November. Organizations all over the world that use GIS, or are interested in GIS, are invited to participate by holding or sponsoring an event of their own. More than 80 countries will participate by holding local events, such as corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos and school assemblies.
