Las Vegas Municipal Pool and Ward 5 Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow will host a Teen Luau for homeless teens Saturday, Sept. 15, from 2 to 5 p.m. The pool is located at 431 E. Bonanza Road.
The event is being organized solely by Clark County Black Youth Caucus, a group of area youth that was awarded a grant through the city’s Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program (YNAPP). YNAPP is coordinated by the city of Las Vegas Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department and offers mini-grants of up to $1,000 to community-minded youth with a desire to improve and serve their communities. These youth are challenged to take ownership of their neighborhoods and to create projects that will improve quality of life for city of Las Vegas residents.
In addition to the pool party, the event will incorporate resources for homeless teens including a motivational talk by Councilman Barlow about the importance of continuing their education. An area 7-Eleven will sponsor food and beverages and the world’s youngest DJ, Baby Chino, will also donate his talent for the cause.
“I am most proud of this event because it is designed by our very own local youth to give homeless teens an opportunity to celebrate the end of summer with their peers,” Councilman Barlow said. “These teens have had to face so many challenges, we wanted to take the time to acknowledge them and provide them with resources that will keep them moving forward.”
