Councilman Bob Coffin will host a ceremony to officially dedicate the renamed Justice Myron E. Leavitt and Jaycee Community Park on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. at 2100 E. St. Louis Ave.
On April 4, 2012, the Las Vegas City Council approved the renaming of the park to include recognition of both Justice Leavitt and the Jaycees, or Junior Chamber of Commerce.
The park, originally named for the Jaycees, was constructed in 1966. The Jaycees were instrumental in the inception of the park. Through the years, the Jaycees disbanded in Las Vegas and the park went through many renovations and expansions. On Dec. 3, 2008, the park was named after Justice Leavitt, who was a chief justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. Over the years, he had frequented the park, coaching football and other sports.
The new park name of Justice Myron E. Leavitt and Jaycee Community Park honors both Justice Leavitt and the Jaycees.
