Las Vegas firefighters responded to 2312 Sun Cliffs Street (Lake Mead/Thomas Ryan) at 8:54 Wednesday morning after dispatchers received several calls that a house was on fire. As firefighters left their stations, they could see a column of black smoke from the fire.
When firefighters arrived, the garage was heavily involved with fire. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control in the one-story, wood frame/stucco house.
The fire completely gutted the garage, and destroyed a new car and a golf cart. The rest of the house had heavy heat and smoke damage. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
Two senior adults live in the home. One of them was home when the smoke alarm activated and the man could smell something burning. Nothing was visible inside the house. He kept looking and when he opened the door from the interior of the home into the garage he was met by a wall of fire. He slammed the door shut and ran out the front door.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. Fire investigators determined the fire started in the garage, but were unable to pinpoint the exact cause. The fire appears to be accidental in nature.
A husband and wife are displaced along with two dogs. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
The husband was treated for very slight smoke inhalation and then released on scene by LVFR paramedics.
