An east Las Vegas apartment was gutted by fire late Thursday night. No one was home at the time of the fire. There were no reported injuries.
Fire dispatchers received a number of 9-1-1 calls at 10:51 p.m. that smoke was coming from a second floor apartment at the Playa Vista Apartments, 3700 E. Bonanza Road.
When firefighters arrived a few minutes later, heavy smoke and fire engulfed the small apartment. Firefighters went inside and doused the blaze in a few minutes. Firefighters was able to contain it to the one apartment, which was completely gutted. Damage was estimated at $60,000.
No one was home at the time of the fire. The young couple that lives in the unit told fire investigators that they arrived home and when they opened the front door, they found the apartment full of thick smoke. A few seconds later heavy flames were visible.
Fire investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen around the stove. Occupants told fire investigators they were not cooking. The exact cause of the fire could not be determined because of the extensive destruction of the kitchen.
The American Red Cross assisted the two occupants of the apartment.
This is the second kitchen fire in less than twenty-fours that caused extensive damage. On Wednesday night, firefighters responded to the Sahara Palms Apartments on El Camino Avenue for a cooking fire that extended to the kitchen. That fire caused $20,000 damage after the occupant threw water on a grease fire which extended to the rest of the kitchen. Two adults and five children were displaced and were assisted by the American Red Cross.
At the same time firefighters were fighting the fire at the Sahara Palm apartments, Las Vegas firefighters also responded to a microwave on fire in the kitchen of a unit at the Torrey Pines Condos on North Torrey Pines Road Damage was confined to the microwave, there were no injuries.
Cooking related fires are the leading cause of fires in Las Vegas as well as the rest of the U.S. and the leading cause of fire related injuries.
