Parents as Learning Support (PALS) Grant Project

Parents and teachers at the Elbert Edwards Elementary school used a Parents as Learning Support (PALS) grant to buys supplies for an English as a second language class. A class project was to create a cookbook. The parents each wrote their favorite recipe in English for the cookbook. They prepared the recipe for a celebration. The ESL classes are a great way to improve parent/teacher communication and parental involvement. The classes offer the chance to improve English skills while their children stay busy with other activities. PALS grants can be used to bring resources, training and tools to qualifying elementary school communities for programs that promote learning in the classroom and after school. Matching grants of up to $8,000 are intended to encourage parents and school staff to partner in defining and addressing the needs of their school. The program is aimed at low-income areas where the schools are struggling to meet their Annual Yearly Performance (AYP) benchmark. The PALS grant application process will be open this summer. The PALS grant program is just one of the many to benefit city youth. Call 229-2330 for more information. Click a thumbnail to the left to change this image
